New Testament Lesson: Ephesians 5:8-14 (Live as children of the light)
Gospel Lesson: Luke 22:39-53 (Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane)
Luke 23:44-46 (The hour of darkness – Jesus dies)
On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenburg, protesting the sale of indulgences for the forgiveness of sins. Luther did not want to divide the church, but to recover the Gospel, the redeeming work of Jesus.
Interestingly, Reformation Sunday falls on the same day we are looking at Chapter 26 of the Story – “The Hour of Darkness” – the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus. These events recorded in scripture capture the holiest events in the history of mankind – the fulfillment of God’s work to redeem sinful mankind.
