Messiah’s summer camp is heading into its sixth season. Every year it grows bigger as word of mouth spreads. Parents and kids alike rave about the experience. The communications team asked director Wesly Pinkston to reflect on what makes summer camp at Messiah so special.
Messiah’s summer camp is an “outdoor camp in a day camp setting.” Parents today are justifiably concerned about their kids spending too much time in front of screens, and our camp addresses that concern by being a throw-back to summer as it used to be—lots of outdoor time, classic camp games, crafts, and, of course, music! And it’s all done in a setting that gives thanks and glory to God for the beautiful creation He has given us to enjoy (even if it’s hot and muddy!). The day is completely planned out and structured, and a daily field trip to places like the St. Louis Zoo, Wapelhorst Pool, and local parks is always a highlight.
One of the most unique features of Messiah’s summer camp is its flexible scheduling options. Families only have to pay for the days they attend, and they can pick those days on a week-to-week basis. Of course, that’s not the only thing parents love about it! Its primary characteristic is that it lives out Messiah’s mission of “Connecting People to Jesus.” The camp staff is trained to play, talk, and pray with kids and help them make friends in a context that is Christ-centered. Messiah has always had a dedicated staff who work long hours building relationships with the campers. We believe connection takes place when kids are immersed in God’s Word and building relationships with Christian mentors and peers.
A popular way we connect with God and each other is through music. We sing contemporary worship songs as well as “camp songs” with goofy motions and lyrics. Music is a great way for families to incorporate faith into their home. You don’t have to have extensive biblical knowledge to sing along in the car to JOY-FM! If you want to take it deeper, you can talk about the promises of God that each song reveals, discuss how those promises are often repeated because we can never hear them enough, and then talk about how they apply to your life. We all need to be reminded that God is faithful, God is good, and God loves us!
Messiah’s summer camp is a unique and amazing experience for both staff and kids alike. It’s so great to witness the relationships that the counselors build with campers and their fellow counselors. They show incredible teamwork as they work together to get through tough days. Their energy and joy are contagious, and it’s a real pleasure to see the campers catch their enthusiasm.
Messiah is so thankful for all of the campers, families, and counselors who come together over the summer. Our goal every year is to improve upon the one before and continue to provide safe, fun care in a Christ-centered environment.
