Community Service Opportunity Invitation by Julie Stroder, Messiah Missions Coordinator
The Lutheran Hope Center in Ferguson was created to “share the hope that is ours in Jesus Christ to a broken and hurting community in words and acts of mercy.” Housed in the Urban League Empowerment Center, it works in partnership with St. Louis’s North County LCMS congregations to help youth and families thrive spiritually, academically, socially, and personally.
Messiah has partnered with the Hope Center twice in the past eight months.
At Christmas we supported their efforts to develop a “Readers to Leaders” program with gifts of books and puzzles and presented a financial gift to support their Executive Director, Pastor Micah Glenn.
In May, we sponsored “Mother’s Day in the Park,” an event to give kids in the area a chance to hang out, enjoy lunch from P’Sghetti’s, and create a special gift for their mom.
The Hope Center recently asked Messiah to help with another event, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to say “yes”!
On Saturday, September 8 the Hope Center will be a part of the Fun 4 Purpose Community Carnival.
The event will be from 10:00 to 3:00 at Lutheran North High School. The fun-filled family carnival is intended to serve the community by saluting education. Scholarships will be presented during the festivities to two Lutheran North seniors who participated in an essay competition on “the importance of purpose.” Last year, over 800 people attended the carnival.
We have been asked to help staff food and game booths.
While it is difficult for them to predict how many volunteers are needed, we know it will be a great experience for all who want to help!
Be sure to register by August 25 to get your free t-shirt!
