In the Old Testament, God created festivals to help people celebrate the blessings of God, and keep their lives organized around and focused on God’s ways. Every 7th year was to be a Sabbath year – the fields were not to be planted to give the ground a rest. God promised to provide extra in the 6th year. Every 50th year (7 sets of 7) was to be the Year of Jubilee – all debts were forgiven, all prisoners set free, all land given back to the original owners. Ultimately – the year of Jubilee was a picture of what Jesus has done for us – given us peace, rest, joy and a reason to celebrate.
