Old Testament Lesson: Jonah 1:1-12, 15-17 (Jonah flees from God)
Gospel Lesson: Luke 11:29-32 (The sign of Jonah)
The story of Jonah is one of the most interesting and well-known stories in the Old Testament. Called by God to preach to the people of Nineva, Jonah tried to run away. Swallowed by a fish, spit out three days later, Jonah eventually preached and the people of Ninevah repented. The book of Jonah has a lot to teach us about God’s grace, mission, the power of God’s Word and repentance, and the extreme nature of God’s mercy. Most of all, Jonah was a picture of Jesus who was in the tomb and rose to life on the third day.
