Old Testament Lesson: Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10
(After rebuilding the temple and walls of Jerusalem, Ezra reads God’s law to the people of God)
Gospel Lesson: Luke 4:16-30
(Jesus rejected in Nazareth after his message in the synagogue)
In Luke 4, Jesus asserts that He is God’s anointed one, the Messiah, the Savior for all mankind from the power of sin. But a deep part of mankind’s sinful condition is resistance and resentment to authority – the authority of God, and the authority God places over us in the world. But Jesus will never relinquish that position of authority in spite of our rebellion. Instead, He submits Himself to His Father’s will, and lays down His life as a sacrifice for our sins. He rules His kingdom with truth and grace!
