Old Testament Lesson: II Kings 2:1-12 (Elijah is taken to heaven)
Gospel Readings: Luke 1:16-17, Matthew 11:11-14, Matthew 17:10-13 (John the Baptist comes in the spirit of Elijah)
Elijah was a prophet in Israel during the reign of King Ahab – perhaps the most evil and ungodly king in Israel’s history. Elijah was called to speak out against the evil that King Ahab and his wife Jezebel promoted, which led to persecution. Jesus reminds us that it is better to fear God and walk in His ways than it is to fear the world and give into the pressures of evil.
