Old Testament Lesson: Jeremiah 38:1-13 (Jeremiah thrown into a cistern)
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 5:11-12, 24:9-14 (Persecuted because of Jesus)
“An Ace in the Hole” is a cliché that means an advantage you have that other people do not know about. The prophet Jeremiah lived in Jerusalem in the days leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem. He spoke fervently about repentance and God’s judgment, but was largely ignored and then persecuted. Even though he was thrown in a cistern to silence his voice, a person willing to speak God’s Word of truth even in the face of persecution is still “an ace in the hole” for God’s kingdom.
