Joanie Smith Recommended for Call as Principal

As previously communicated, Dr. Tom Guenzler is retiring as Principal at the end of this year. I am pleased to announced that Joanie Smith has been recommended for a call to serve as Principal of Messiah Lutheran School starting with the 2016-17 school year.
Joanie received her Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Concordia Chicago in 1989.  She has a Masters Degree in Curriculum & Instruction and an additional Masters Degree in Educational Leadership.  She taught in northern Illinois for 23 years and has been serving as Principal for the past four years at Zion Lutheran School in Marengo, IL.

Joanie and her husband Brian have been married for 24 years and have two daughters in college. As Pastor Schlie’s sister, Joanie has visited Messiah often, thus she is very familiar with Messiah Lutheran Church & School.

Next Step
A congregational meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5 at 7pm to approve the recommendation from the Board of Lay Ministry to call Joanie Smith as Principal of Messiah Lutheran School. Members of Messiah Lutheran Church age 18+ are invited to attend the meeting.

Review of Process
As previously communicated, here is a brief review of the hiring process we followed for this position:

  • Gathered names, resumes, and information forms.
  • Initial phone interviews by the School Leadership Team with interested candidates.
  • Second round live interviews with the School Leadership Team, Executive Ministry Team, and faculty.
  • Final interviews with pastors.

All input was gathered and assessed from the various groups involved, and the Executive Ministry Team brought a final name to the Board of Lay Ministry. The Board of Lay Ministry unanimously approved the recommendation to call Joanie Smith.

Please let me know if you have any questions. We look forward to proceeding with the call process!

Have a blessed day in the Lord,

Paul Schult
Senior Pastor
