Can you celebrate cancer? Well, maybe not celebrate cancer, but we certainly can celebrate surviving cancer. That is what twenty plus cancer survivors, family, friends and those fighting cancer did early in October at Messiah under the theme “Hope Grows”. Our Cancer Companions group (a part of Messiah’s Care and Support Ministry) hosted such a celebration to give thanks to God for his gracious care, recognize the support and encouragement from family and friends and remember our loved ones who are with our Lord.
We shared stories and information about good nutrition, exercise, relaxation techniques and some healthy snacks. A candle was lit in memory of loved ones and we celebrated their lives and their faith in our God who loves each one of us. Our local clown taught us to make balloon flowers for humor which is very good medicine. Everyone took home a “goodie bag” with nutritional recipes, a rock of “hope”, an inspirational bookmark and a special music CD to relax by. Also we included flowers of “Hope”, blue iris bubs and daisy seeds for a spring garden.
Celebrate we did! All present thought we should do it again and we will. Plan to celebrate with us next time as we remember God is good to us even in tough times.
